AEO (Answer Engine Optimization): what measurably gets content cited by AI assistants

Problem

Content ranks fine in classic search but never gets cited or the brand never gets named in AI assistant answers (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Google AI Overviews). Classic SEO alone doesn't transfer: ChatGPT citations overlap with Google's organic top 10 only ~8% of the time, so AI visibility needs its own optimization layer.

Solution

Treat AI engines as RAG pipelines that need liftable, groundable passages. Highest-leverage moves per 2025-2026 citation studies: (1) open every major section with a 40-60 word self-contained answer under a question-shaped H2/H3; (2) add quotations (+41% citation lift), fresh dated statistics (+33%), and cited sources (+28%); (3) name entities explicitly — 15+ recognized entities per page correlates with ~4.8x selection probability; (4) add schema markup (FAQPage, HowTo, Product, Organization) and keep a visible last-updated date; (5) verify robots.txt allows AI search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended) and that content is server-rendered since AI crawlers execute little JS; (6) seed brand mentions on the third-party sources engines cite (Reddit, YouTube, review sites, comparison roundups) and keep brand facts consistent across the web — LLMs treat cross-source corroboration as authority. Measure with share-of-answer: monthly, prompt each engine with your top buyer questions and log who gets named; segment AI referrers in analytics (they convert 4-20x organic).

Why

AI engines cite for grounding: they retrieve semantically relevant chunks, re-rank, and attribute sources they can defend. Self-contained answer blocks, verifiable stats, and cross-web consistency are exactly what a RAG pipeline scores highly.

Gotchas

  • Google AI Overviews still correlate with organic top-10, but the share fell from 76% to ~38% in a year — don't rely on rankings alone
  • llms.txt has ~10% adoption and unproven ROI; cheap to add but don't oversell it
  • You can block AI training bots (GPTBot, ClaudeBot) while staying citable via the separate search bots — blocking the wrong user-agent kills citations
  • Client-side rendered content is invisible to most AI crawlers

Context

Applies when optimizing any website or store for visibility inside AI assistant answers rather than (or in addition to) classic search rankings.
