Next.js App Router: a server action redirect called from startTransition remounts the whole page unless caught

Problem
A client form calls a Server Action imperatively, for example
startTransition(() => updateItem(formData)) to autosave one field on blur. When the action ends with redirect() (for example to ?error=... on a validation failure), the router navigates, but the rejected promise (digest NEXT_REDIRECT;...) propagates up to Next's redirect boundary. That boundary remounts the whole tree. Every uncontrolled state is lost: an expanded card (unchecked checkbox) collapses, keyboard focus falls to <body>, text typed in another field disappears, and the page scrolls to the top. Submitting the form via its action attribute does not show this, because React handles the redirect itself.Solution
Catch the redirect error where you call the action and rethrow anything else. On success, clean the URL on the client with router.replace(url, { scroll: false }) instead of redirecting from the server, since a server redirect always scrolls. If another non-modal <dialog> on the page stays open only while
?error= is present, skip the cleanup while that dialog is open, or its input is lost.Why
Next's server-action reducer rethrows the redirect so that an uncaught one is handled by the nearest redirect error boundary, which remounts its subtree. Catching it in the caller keeps the current tree while the navigation still happens.
Gotchas
- The error only carries a digest string; check its NEXT_REDIRECT; prefix rather than importing internal Next helpers, which can move between versions.
- A refused field keeps the invalid typed value once the tree is no longer remounted. Show the error next to it, or reset it on purpose.
- A test that only checks the URL after the action will not see the remount; check that the same DOM node is still connected and that focus stays in the form.
Code Snippets
Catch the redirect in the caller, clean the URL on success
const isRedirect = (e: unknown) =>
typeof e === "object" && e !== null && "digest" in e &&
typeof (e as { digest: unknown }).digest === "string" &&
(e as { digest: string }).digest.startsWith("NEXT_REDIRECT;");
startTransition(async () => {
try {
await updateItem(one);
} catch (e) {
if (!isRedirect(e)) throw e;
return; // router already navigated; tree kept
}
const url = new URL(location.href);
if (url.searchParams.has("error")) {
url.searchParams.delete("error");
router.replace(url.pathname + url.search, { scroll: false });
}
});Context
At runtime, when a client component calls a Server Action directly (not via the form action attribute) and the action ends with redirect(), typically to show a validation error in the URL.
